Face Detection

An AI capability that locates human faces within images so portrait edits can target face regions instead of the whole photo.

Face detection algorithms find face locations, orientations, and key landmarks such as eyes, nose, mouth, jawline, and eyebrows. Detection is different from face recognition: it answers where a face is, not who the person is. Modern systems can detect faces across varied angles, sizes, lighting conditions, and partial occlusions, though accuracy can drop with motion blur, masks, heavy shadows, extreme poses, or very small faces. In photo editing, face detection supports targeted portrait enhancements such as skin smoothing, eye brightening, red-eye correction, background blur that preserves face sharpness, and face-aware cropping that keeps subjects centered. Privacy workflows can also use it to blur faces in street photography or security footage before sharing. The same landmark tracking powers many social media filters and AR effects that follow facial features in real time.
