White Balance

A color adjustment that makes whites look neutral by compensating for the color temperature of the light source.

Different light sources have different color temperatures, measured in Kelvin. Incandescent bulbs around 2700K add a yellow-orange cast. Daylight can range from warm sunrise light near 3000K to cooler midday light near 6500K. Fluorescent lamps may add a green tint. Camera auto white balance tries to neutralize these casts, but it often chooses the wrong reference in mixed lighting or unusual light.

Interior photos show the problem clearly. A room lit by warm lamps beside a window with cool daylight contains two color temperatures in one frame. If the camera balances for the window, lamp-lit areas look orange. If it balances for the lamps, window areas look blue. Good white balance correction reduces those casts so walls, fabrics, products, and skin tones look natural.

White balance is usually corrected early in a photo-editing workflow because every later color decision depends on it. Fixing a yellow or blue cast changes the entire image, which affects saturation, contrast, and creative color grading. Starting with the wrong white balance can compound color errors through the rest of the edit.
