Sharpening
An enhancement technique that increases edge contrast to make image details appear crisper and more defined.
Sharpening works by increasing the contrast along edges in an image, making transitions between different elements appear more distinct and defined. Traditional unsharp masking (USM) detects edges by comparing each pixel to a blurred version of itself, then amplifying the difference. Parameters include amount (how much contrast to add), radius (edge width), and threshold (how much difference constitutes an edge). Over-sharpening introduces visible halos — bright lines along dark-to-light transitions — that degrade image quality.\n\nLandscape photographers apply sharpening to make foreground rocks, tree bark, and architectural details pop. A sharp mountain landscape has clearly defined ridges, visible snow texture, and crisp rock formations. The same image without sharpening looks slightly soft, as if viewed through slightly dirty glass. Careful sharpening brings out the natural detail without introducing artifacts.\n\nAI sharpening improves upon traditional methods by understanding image content. It applies stronger sharpening to areas with meaningful detail (text, edges, textures) and lighter or no sharpening to smooth areas (sky, skin, out-of-focus backgrounds). This content-aware approach avoids amplifying noise in smooth areas while maximizing detail in textured regions. It also handles the common problem of motion blur — slight softness from camera shake — better than traditional tools.\n\nMagic Eraser's AI Enhance applies intelligent sharpening as part of its enhancement pipeline. The AI identifies which areas of the image benefit from sharpening and applies appropriate levels to each region. This produces crisper, more detailed images without the halos and noise amplification that manual sharpening tools often introduce. The content-aware sharpening approach means that portrait subjects receive natural-looking enhancement that preserves skin smoothness while crisping eyes, hair, and clothing, and landscape images gain dramatic texture detail in rocks and foliage without introducing harsh artifacts in sky regions.
