Shadows & Highlights

Post-processing adjustments that independently control the brightness of dark (shadow) and bright (highlight) regions.

Shadow and highlight recovery is one of the most powerful tools in modern photo editing. Lifting shadows reveals detail in underexposed dark areas — faces in shade, details in dark clothing, texture in deep forest canopy. Pulling down highlights recovers detail in overexposed bright areas — cloud texture in blown-out skies, detail in bright white clothing, window views from dark interiors. RAW files contain significantly more recoverable shadow and highlight data than JPEGs. Professional photographers intentionally expose to protect highlights and recover shadows later, a technique called exposing to the right. AI enhancement tools intelligently adjust shadows and highlights per-region, applying stronger recovery where detail exists without amplifying noise in truly black areas.
