PNG

Portable Network Graphics — a lossless image format that supports transparency, widely used for web graphics and cutout images.

PNG preserves every pixel perfectly with no quality loss from compression, making it ideal for graphics with sharp edges, text, logos, and images requiring transparency. The format supports full alpha transparency with 256 levels of opacity per pixel, enabling smooth anti-aliased edges when compositing subjects onto new backgrounds. PNG files are typically larger than JPEGs because lossless compression achieves lower ratios than lossy. PNG-8 supports 256 colors for simple graphics, while PNG-24 and PNG-32 support millions of colors with and without alpha channels. E-commerce product photos with removed backgrounds are typically saved as PNG to preserve the transparent background. Magic Eraser's Background Eraser outputs PNG files for maximum quality and transparency support.
