A defined range of colors that an image can represent, determining the gamut of available colors.
A color space defines the boundaries of which colors an image can contain. Common color spaces include sRGB (the standard for web displays and most consumer devices), Adobe RGB (a wider gamut covering approximately 50% of visible colors, used in print workflows), Display P3 (Apple's wide-gamut standard covering approximately 25% more colors than sRGB), and ProPhoto RGB (an extremely wide gamut used in professional photography workflows). Each color space maps the same RGB number values to different actual colors.\n\nA photographer printing fine art landscapes encounters color space limitations directly. A vibrant sunset photographed in Adobe RGB contains deep oranges and saturated reds that fall outside the sRGB gamut. If the image is converted to sRGB for a web portfolio, those rich colors are compressed to the nearest sRGB equivalent, appearing less vivid. A high-quality print from the Adobe RGB file, however, reproduces the original colors faithfully on printers that support the wider gamut.\n\nColor space mismanagement is a common source of washed-out or oversaturated images.
