Emoji Overlay

An emoji placed on top of a photo to cover, decorate, or censor part of the image — distinct from an emoji that is part of the original scene.

An emoji overlay is a graphic emoji layered onto a photo after it was taken, most often to hide a face, a background detail, or sensitive text before sharing on social media. Because the overlay sits above the original pixels rather than replacing them, the content underneath still existed in the source image — which is exactly why people later want to remove the overlay to recover the original photo. Removing an emoji overlay is an inpainting problem: the AI must reconstruct the region the emoji covered using the surrounding context, since the overlay itself carries no information about what is behind it. The quality of the result depends on how much of the underlying scene is inferable from the visible surroundings — a face partially hidden by a small emoji reconstructs well, while an emoji covering the entire subject leaves the model little to work from. Emoji overlays are common on Instagram Stories, Snapchat, and TikTok, where built-in stickers are applied during editing. This makes 'remove emoji from photo' a high-intent task: users typically want to see the original moment the overlay was hiding.
