Image Synthesis

The generation of entirely new images by AI models trained on large datasets, producing photorealistic or artistic visuals from noise, text, or other inputs.

Image synthesis encompasses all AI techniques that create new visual content rather than modifying existing images. The field evolved from early GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks) that produced faces and textures, to modern diffusion models that generate complex scenes from text descriptions. Key architectures include latent diffusion (Stable Diffusion), autoregressive transformers, and consistency models optimized for speed. Applications span creative content generation, data augmentation for training other AI models, virtual try-on for fashion, and architectural visualization. The quality of synthesized images now regularly passes human discrimination tests, raising both creative opportunities and ethical considerations around deepfakes and content authenticity.
