Non-Destructive Editing
An editing approach where original image data is never permanently altered, allowing any adjustment to be modified or removed at any time.
Non-destructive editing preserves the original pixel data by storing adjustments as instructions rather than applying them permanently. Adjustment layers apply color corrections as reversible overlays. Smart objects allow filters and transforms to be re-edited. Masks hide content without deleting it. Sidecar files store processing instructions alongside the original RAW file. This approach enables unlimited experimentation — editors can compare different color grades, try various crops, and apply or remove effects without quality degradation. The original file remains pristine, serving as the single source of truth. Non-destructive workflows are essential for professional work where client revisions are common and maintaining maximum quality through multiple rounds of feedback is critical.
