How to remove a timestamp from a photo

Orange date stamps from old digital cameras, security camera timestamps, or screenshot time overlays — Magic Eraser removes embedded text stamps while reconstructing the image content behind them.

Timestamps were useful then, annoying now con Magic Eraser

Early digital cameras and disposable cameras often burned date/time stamps directly into image pixels — a feature that seemed useful at the time but now clutters otherwise cherished photos. Security cameras embed continuous timestamps. Screenshots capture clock and status bar text. Unlike EXIF metadata (which can be stripped without affecting the image), these visual timestamps are part of the pixel data and cannot be toggled off. Removing them requires inpainting — the AI must understand what the image looks like behind the text and reconstruct those pixels. For corner timestamps over simple backgrounds (sky, wall), this is straightforward. For timestamps over complex areas (faces, detailed patterns), the AI uses contextual understanding to generate plausible content.

  1. 1

    Upload the photo

Open Magic Eraser on web, iOS, or Android. Upload the photo with the timestamp or text overlay you want to remove.

  2. 2

    Brush over the timestamp

Use the brush tool to paint over the entire timestamp text. Cover all characters including any surrounding colored background the camera added. For security camera timestamps that span the full width, use a wide brush and paint across in one stroke.

  3. 3

    Review reconstruction and export

The AI fills the timestamp area with appropriate content — sky gradient, wall texture, or whatever was behind the text. Check that the reconstruction blends seamlessly with surrounding areas. Export the clean photo.

Cover the entire timestamp with margin — partially removed text leaves visible character fragments that are harder to remove in a second pass. For the classic orange date stamps in the corner of old photos, the background is usually simple (sky, wall, ground) and the AI produces flawless results. Timestamps over faces or detailed areas require the AI to generate more content, so results may need minor touch-up. If the photo has both a timestamp and a watermark, remove them separately for cleaner results. For security camera footage, batch-process multiple frames to remove the persistent overlay from the same position.

Domande frequenti

Can I keep the date in EXIF data while removing the visual stamp?
Yes. Removing the visual timestamp only affects the pixel data. The EXIF metadata (date, camera info) is preserved in the exported file by default. You still have the date information, just not burned into the image.
Does it work on security camera timestamps?
Yes. Security camera timestamps are typically white or yellow text on a dark bar. Brush over the entire text area. The AI reconstructs the scene behind the timestamp overlay.
Is timestamp removal free?
Yes. Object removal features are available in the free tier with daily usage limits. Premium removes limits for batch processing.
