How to blur the background of a photo

Professional portrait photographers use wide aperture lenses to blur backgrounds and make subjects pop. If your phone or camera didn't capture that shallow depth of field, Magic Eraser's AI adds natural-looking background blur after the fact.

Why background blur makes photos look professional con Magic Eraser

Background blur (bokeh) separates the subject from distracting environments by reducing background detail while keeping the subject sharp. Professional cameras achieve this optically with wide aperture lenses (f/1.4 - f/2.8), but phone cameras and smaller sensors produce deep focus where everything is sharp — including the cluttered office, messy kitchen, or crowded street behind the subject. Manual background blur in Photoshop requires creating a precise mask around the subject (including hair edges, which are notoriously difficult), then applying a lens blur filter to only the background — a process that takes 15-30 minutes per image. Magic Eraser's AI detects the subject automatically, creates a precise mask including fine hair detail, and applies natural-looking gaussian or lens blur to the background.

Instrucciones paso a paso

  1. 1

    Upload the photo

Open Magic Eraser on web, iOS, or Android. Upload the photo where you want to blur the background — a portrait, product shot, or any image where the subject should stand out from the environment. JPEG, PNG, HEIC, and WebP supported.

  2. 2

    Select background blur

Choose the background blur tool. The AI automatically detects the main subject and separates it from the background. The subject remains sharp while the background receives natural blur. Adjust the blur intensity — light blur for subtle separation, heavy blur for dramatic portrait-style bokeh.

  3. 3

    Review and export

Check the result at full zoom, particularly the edges where the subject meets the blurred background. Hair, clothing edges, and complex outlines should transition naturally from sharp to blurred. If any background area was mistakenly kept sharp or any subject area was blurred, refine the mask. Export at full resolution.

The AI produces the most natural blur when there's clear separation between subject and background. Subjects standing away from the background (not leaning against a wall) produce cleaner results because the depth difference is clear. For portraits, moderate blur (not maximum) often looks most natural — extreme blur on a phone photo looks artificial because it doesn't match the lens's actual optical characteristics. The blur should increase gradually with distance from the subject — objects just behind the subject should be slightly blurred, while distant background should be heavily blurred. The AI handles this depth gradient automatically. For group photos, all people are kept sharp while the environment behind them is blurred.

Preguntas frecuentes

Does it look like real camera bokeh?
Yes. The AI applies a natural depth gradient — slight blur near the subject increasing to heavy blur in the distant background. The effect matches what a wide aperture lens would produce, including natural falloff at the edges.
Can it blur the background behind hair?
Yes. The AI handles hair edges — one of the hardest parts of background separation. Individual hair strands are kept sharp while the background visible between strands is blurred naturally.
Does it work on group photos?
Yes. The AI detects all people in the frame and keeps them all sharp while blurring the background behind the group. It also handles subjects at different depths.
Is background blur free?
Yes. Background blur is available on the free tier with daily usage limits. Premium removes limits and adds higher blur intensity options.
