Why vintage photo restoration is urgent

Photo prints are physical objects that degrade continuously. Every year, the fading progresses, the yellowing deepens, the scratches accumulate, and the paper becomes more brittle. A photo that's moderately faded today will be severely faded in ten years. A photo with a small water stain today may have mold spreading through it in a decade. The restoration window is closing for every unscanned, unrestored print.

The most common damage types accumulate predictably. Color prints from the 1960s-1980s develop a magenta or yellow color shift as dye layers fade at different rates. Black-and-white prints lose contrast and develop a brownish tone. All prints yellow from acid in the paper. Water damage creates stains and mold. Physical handling creates scratches, fingerprints, and creases.

Scanning old photos for the best restoration results

The scan quality determines the ceiling of what AI restoration can achieve. A 300 DPI scan captures enough for screen viewing and small prints. A 600 DPI scan provides enough data for AI to recover detail that isn't visible at lower resolutions — facial features in group photos, text on signs, fabric patterns. For the most important family photos, 1200 DPI captures everything the print contains.

If you don't have a scanner, photograph the print with your phone. Lay the print flat on a table in indirect natural light (avoid glare from overhead lights). Hold your phone parallel to the print with both hands, filling the frame with the image. Take multiple shots — focus accuracy varies and you want the sharpest version.

For negatives and slides, a dedicated film scanner produces the best results, but many flatbed scanners include transparency adapters that work well. If you're photographing negatives with a phone, backlight them with a white phone screen or a lightbox and use the phone's macro mode.

Scan or photograph everything, even damaged images. Prints that look hopelessly damaged often contain more recoverable information than you expect. A dark, stained, faded print that looks like a brown rectangle may reveal clear faces and scenery after AI processing.

Removing scratches, stains, and physical damage
