How to make a passport photo at home

Passport photo services charge $10-15 for something you can do at home in 2 minutes. Magic Eraser removes the background, replaces it with the required white, and helps you crop to the correct dimensions — US, UK, EU, or any country's specifications.

Passport photo requirements are stricter than you think com Magic Eraser

Government passport offices reject a significant percentage of submitted photos for avoidable issues: wrong background color, incorrect dimensions, improper head size ratio, shadows on the face or background, and glasses reflections. US passport photos require a white background, 2x2 inch dimensions, and the head must occupy 50-69% of the image height. UK passport photos require a light gray or cream background at 35x45mm. Each country has specific requirements. Professional passport photo services at pharmacies and post offices charge $10-15 per set and still sometimes produce rejectable results. Magic Eraser handles the key correction: replacing any background with the required white and ensuring clean, even lighting.

Instruções passo a passo

  1. 1

    Take the photo

Stand against any plain-ish wall or background (the AI will replace it). Use natural light from a window in front of you — no flash. Hold the phone at eye level, 4-5 feet away. Look directly at the camera with a neutral expression, mouth closed. Remove glasses if possible (many countries now require glasses-free photos).

  2. 2

    Remove and replace the background

Upload to Magic Eraser. Use background removal to strip the existing background, then replace with pure white (for US, Schengen, most countries) or light gray (UK, some other countries). Check that no shadows from the original background remain and that hair edges are clean against the white.

  3. 3

    Crop and export

Crop to your country's required dimensions — 2x2 inches (US), 35x45mm (UK/EU), or the specific size for your destination. Center the face with the head occupying the correct proportion of the frame. Export at 300 DPI minimum for printing. Print at a photo lab or on glossy photo paper at home.

Lighting is the most important factor — stand facing a large window with natural light illuminating your face evenly. Avoid overhead room lighting that creates shadows under eyes and nose. The background doesn't matter (the AI will replace it) but even facial lighting does matter. For babies and small children, lay them on a white sheet and photograph from directly above — this is the accepted technique and the AI handles the sheet-to-white-background conversion. Take multiple photos and pick the one with the most natural, neutral expression. Most rejections are for expression (smiling, squinting) and shadow issues, not background problems — the AI handles the background perfectly but can't fix a bad expression.

Perguntas frequentes

Will the passport office accept an AI-edited photo?
Yes. Passport offices evaluate the final photo against their requirements — background color, dimensions, head size, expression. How the background was produced (studio vs. AI removal) is not evaluated. The result must simply meet the technical specifications.
What background color does the US require?
White or off-white. Magic Eraser's white background option produces pure white (RGB 255,255,255), which meets US State Department requirements.
Can I use a phone for the photo?
Yes. Modern phone cameras exceed the minimum resolution requirement. Use the rear camera (not selfie camera) for better quality, held at arm's length or by another person. Natural window light produces the best results.
Is passport photo creation free?
Yes. Background removal and white background replacement are available on the free tier. This alone saves the $10-15 charged by passport photo services.
