Generative Fill

An AI feature that creates new image content to fill selected areas, guided by the surrounding visual context.

Generative fill uses trained AI models to synthesize entirely new pixels that match the style, lighting, texture, and content of the surrounding image. Unlike content-aware fill, which copies and blends existing patches from elsewhere in the image, generative fill creates novel content that has never existed before. The AI understands scene context — if you remove a tree from a park scene, generative fill creates new grass, fallen leaves, and path continuation rather than simply cloning nearby ground texture.

Digital marketers use generative fill to adapt images for different platforms. A product photo shot in landscape format needs a square crop for Instagram. Rather than cropping and losing content, generative fill extends the image edges to create additional background content, producing a square image that includes the full original composition plus seamlessly generated surroundings.

The technology behind generative fill evolved from inpainting research but represents a qualitative leap in capability. Inpainting fills gaps with plausible content; generative fill can create complex scenes including objects, people, and environments. Current models handle requests like extending a beach scene, adding sky to a cropped landscape, or filling large removed areas with architecturally consistent building facades.

Magic Eraser's AI Fill tool provides generative fill capabilities. After removing an object, the AI fills the area with contextually appropriate generated content. The tool can also extend images beyond their original boundaries (outpainting) and modify specific regions to create variations. This goes beyond simple removal to enable creative image modification. The generative approach means that even large removed areas are filled with plausible, detailed content rather than blurred approximations, and the AI maintains consistency in perspective, lighting, and style throughout the generated region to ensure seamless integration with the untouched portions of the photograph.
